Life Skills

The National Council for Childhood and Motherhood (NCCM), to ensure the effectiveness of its initiatives, stresses the importance of developing life skills, especially for children.

The council believes that life skills assist in dealing with many of the issues it pursues such as female genital mutilation (FGM), violence against women, and the upgrade of marginalized and under privileged areas- all of which are linked by the common denominator of poverty.

What are Life Skills?

Although UNICEF explains that there is no distinct definition for ‘life skills’, some skills have been deemed as essential for the personal development of children. The council aims to instill these skills in children through the education system in Egypt.

The initiative has already been undertaken in many of the community friendly schools of The Girls’ Education Initiative program. The council believes that the following points should be incorporated into the learning process by teachers/ facilitators:

1. Communication and interpersonal skills and that includes verbal/ non-verbal communication, expressing feelings, giving and receiving feedback, active listening, negotiating, conflict management, the ability to listen and understand the needs of others, cooperation and team work.
2. Decision Making and Critical Thinking Skills and that includes decision making and problem solving skills, determining alternative solutions, gathering information, assessing future consequences for present actions, analyzing attitudes and influencing others.
3. Coping and Self Management Skills and that includes building self awareness, self esteem and confidence, goal setting skills, skills for anger and stress management and management of other emotions such as anxiety, loss and abuse
