The National Council for Childhood and Motherhood (NCCM), to ensure the effectiveness of its initiatives, stresses the importance of developing life skills, especially for children.
The council believes that life skills assist in dealing with many of the issues it pursues such as female genital mutilation (FGM), violence against women, and the upgrade of marginalized and under privileged areas- all of which are linked by the common denominator of poverty.
Although UNICEF explains that there is no distinct definition for ‘life skills’, some skills have been deemed as essential for the personal development of children. The council aims to instill these skills in children through the education system in Egypt.
The initiative has already been undertaken in many of the community friendly schools of The Girls’ Education Initiative program. The council believes that the following points should be incorporated into the learning process by teachers/ facilitators:
